Diary of The Next 50 lb Weight Loss: Enjoy In Modification!

Total Wellness Transformation – Hank’s Journey

Hey, it’s Hank here!

After my lengthy rant last week, I promise to rein things in a little bit this week. ‘Tis the season and everywhere at my office, there are gifts from vendors, partner companies and the like. And they aren’t giving everyone ties or gift cards. I never really noticed it until I started this journey, but this holiday season thing seems to be about overindulgence. (How about instead of sending entire red velvet cheesecakes from a factory where they make cheesecake, why can’t they just make a donation to our company charity or something that makes the world a better place? But I digress.) Everywhere you turn there is some sort of treat to tempt you.

Throughout the office, you’ll find giant baskets of gourmet food, platters of holiday cookies and treats, people bringing their homemade baked goods in to share with coworkers. It’s a sweet sentiment, but it can certainly prove challenging. This season, there are more parties and gatherings than any other time of year and I have to work hard to stay on track. Take the company party, for example. We had our holiday party this week and the food they served was incredible, but I tried to stay on track. Just like a workout, there’s always some sort of modification that will make it possible to get it done.

The tray passed appetizers included Kobe beef sliders and I had some – but I had them protein style. One of the servers saw me make it protein style myself and discreetly came up to me and asked if I would like a few more without the brioche buns. Before I knew it, he was back with three more on a small plate with a fork. Successfully modified!

I politely declined the other appetizer options, appealing though they were. When it came time to brave the buffet line, there were multiple stations of delicious food and it was nice to see that there were many healthier options. A pleasant surprise! It was just as festive, just as delicious – only I get to stay on track. I opted for two of the four different salads and lean chicken breast and filet of beef and some grilled asparagus, skipping the bread and rolls and pasta with creamy sauce. Menu modified!

Instead of raiding the dessert table, I had one bite-size cheesecake lollipop. I heard there were many other decadent options I could have enjoyed, but I was trying to stay on track. I don’t look at it as denying myself, I look at it as investing in the new me that I’m in the process of building. I got a little taste of it and found that I didn’t really want more than that. Modified! If I want something sweet, I will usually make myself a Chocolate Shakeology. THAT gets rid of any cravings I might have.

You can modify your workout and you can modify your choices. You just have to be present and make smarter choices. And if the option you want isn’t on display, don’t be afraid to ask for it. Just like at any restaurant, if I don’t see something that will keep me on track, I’ll ask them to do something not on the menu. I ask all the time and I’ve never been denied. They’ve got the ingredients and just because they may not have something on the menu that will work for your healthy eating, that doesn’t mean they can’t do it for you. You just have to modify! (Often, I’ll even get the opportunity to tell our server about Shakeology – an added bonus!)

It was a crazy week and I must have been exhausted, because I slept in this morning until 11:15am. I never do that, so I guess my body took over and let me know that it needed to rest. I’ve got a jam packed weekend of errands and last minute grocery shopping in preparation for the invasion of family and friends for Christmas. I’m trying to be proactive and make sure my fridge is stocked up with healthy foods and options for everyone. I’m eating clean and with a few modifications, I’ll stay on track. I’m down another 1.2 lbs for a total loss of 110.6 lbs. WHOA. I guess discipline and modifications DO pay off!

I’m not saying don’t enjoy the holiday season, don’t allow yourself some treats or a few cocktails. That’s not it at all. I’m just saying that even though it’s the holiday season, you can stay on track – or even decide to GET on track and make a change for a healthier you. You’ve just gotta be proactive, make smart choices…and don’t be afraid to enjoy in modification!

Until next time,

Hank
