Diary of The Next 50 lb Weight Loss: Drive Past The Drive-Thru
Total Wellness Transformation – Hank’s Journey
Hey, it’s Hank here!
I’ve had a crazy week…busy, exciting, energizing, insightful and rewarding, but not terribly restful. Right now it’s Friday night and as I mentioned, I’m leaving on a quick trip Saturday morning for a few days, so in the midst of multiple projects this week, I’ve been preparing for that. I’ve been eating clean, working out in the mornings and continuing to get my strength back. I’m feeling strong and better than I have in weeks.
It’s interesting looking at my punch-list of things to pack now, compared to what it used to be. Now it includes things like:
Shakeology packets
Bullet blender
ActiVit
Resistance bands
DVD’s (both movies for the trip and Beachbody programs for the room)
iPod
Portable speakers for morning workouts
SPF 70 Sunscreen
Charging cables
Healthy snacks
I’m gonna make my Shakeology first thing in the morning before we leave, then pack up my Bullet blender in the suitcase so I can have my shake just the way I like it while on the trip. Less temptation to go have some crazy, opulent breakfast at the hotel. Also, I’m packing some healthy snacks – raw almonds, dried cranberries, celery and string cheese – to tide us over on the drive. That way when we stop for gas in one of those places with 3 gas stations and every imaginable fast food chain known to man, there will be no temptation to revert to the routine of the past.
You know the routine. You say to yourself, “Well, it’s a long drive, I need nourishment,” then you pick a drive thru and end up getting some greasy sack of super-sized, processed food that offers zero nutritional value and no real fuel for your body. I’ve done it more times than I can count in the past and you probably have to. But I don’t do it anymore!
I was actually thinking about it this week. Someone in the office had gone out to run some errands and clearly opted to pick up some fast food on the way back to the office, because all of a sudden the area around my office smelled like I was standing in a McBurger In The Box, Jr. And the smell actually made me queasy. I suddenly realized that it has been over a year since I have had any fast food. No drive-thru for me. It used to be a poor choice I made on the way home from the office late at night. “I don’t have time to cook,” I’d say to myself. Or “this is just easier.” Or “Well, just for tonight. Tomorrow I’ll go to the store and cook.”
But when I started this journey, I quit fast food cold turkey. I knew I had to if I wanted to make serious changes. And my body responded to the actual FOOD I started feeding it. Now, have I had some reward meals and allowed myself an occasional indulgence? Of course! I’m human, I have to. But I haven’t “rewarded” myself with drive-thru cuisine. And now it’s been over a year, so the sudden smell of a bag of greasy fast food actually made my stomach turn. I’m not even kidding when I tell you I went to the office fridge, got out my almond milk and went and made an afternoon Shakeology to combat the queasiness.
The fact that the smell held no temptation, but instead gave me a visceral and negative reaction surprised me. I guess I hadn’t put myself in situations where I would encounter it, so it was kind of out of sight, out of mind. But then I started to notice how many giant billboard there are for fast food. On my commute, there are multiple billboards for huge new double fried chicken patty sandwiches, huge “value” meals with no nutritional value at all and there seems to be a fast food joint on every other corner. And the drive-thru lines are always in effect. But they won’t see me in one. If I’m going to have it my way, then my food isn’t going to be in a paper bag passed to me as they hastily prepare to “nourish” the next 10 cars behind me.
I don’t even find any of it appealing, much less tempting. A nice grilled chicken breast in a salad sounds way better to me than some processed chicken parts compressed into a nugget-shaped morsel that comes in denominations of 10. That was then, this is now. And now, I drive past the drive-thru…and I don’t even look at it. I call that progress. I made changes and formed new habits and they are making me healthier and stronger every day.
Thanks to Carl and Team Beachbody Coaches and their inspiration, I continue on my journey and stay focused. Now, if there was a Shakeology drive-thru, I could be down for that, but until that happens, no drive-thru for me. Unless it’s a car wash or a dry cleaner. I’m down another 1.2 lbs., bringing the total loss to 95 lbs. Wow. I’m so tired, I didn’t even do that math until right now. But I’ll take it!
Okay, this was supposed to be a quick entry as I finished packing for tomorrow morning, but I seem to have gone on a bit of a rant. I’ll just call it an epiphany of sorts and just go with it. I am going to go pack and get some sleep now. I’m continuing my journey and I may stop to refuel, but I’m gonna continue to drive past the drive-thru. I hope you do the same. Here endeth my McRant.
Until next time,
Hank
